Ion exchange process

Ion exchange is a process used to remove unwanted minerals and impurities from feed water by employing ion exchange resins. These resins, which are typically made of organic polymers, contain charged sites that attract and hold ions from the water, effectively exchanging them for other ions. This process is commonly used in water softening and demineralization applications. However, the resins have a limited ion exchange capacity, meaning they can only remove a finite amount of ions before becoming saturated. To restore their functionality, the resins must undergo a regeneration process. Regeneration involves flushing the resins with a concentrated solution of the ions initially used to charge the resin, typically either sodium chloride for water softening or acids and bases for demineralization. This process displaces the captured ions, allowing the resins to regain their ion exchange capacity and be reused in subsequent cycles.
